History: | Named for U.S. Army Pfc. Lori Piestewa (1979-2003), reported to be the first American Indian woman killed in combat when she died in the Iraqi conflict. The variant name Vainom Do'ag (or Vinum Dwaug) is reported to be the Akamel O’odham (Pima) name for the feature. A proposal to name this feature Swilling Peak was submitted in April 2007; the USBGN rejected this proposal in favor of Piestwa Peak, citing the lack of local and State support as the reasons for opposing the name Swilling Peak. A proposal to name this feature Iron Mountain was submitted in September 1997; the proposal was withdrawn 5 April 1999. |
