History: | The name 'estrella', is the Spanish word for 'star', but the origin is unknown. Father Francisco Garces named the mountains 'Sierra de San Joseph de Cumars' in 1775 using the Pima word 'Cumar', meaning 'thick' or 'broad'. After 1851, the name 'Maricopa Mountains' was extended to these mountains while the Maricopa Indians called them 'We-al-hus'. The Pima Indians gave the feature the name 'Kamatuk' or 'Komatke' (AZ-T101). |
