History: | So named since its earliest history because local stockmen brought their horses here to pasture. The mesa has good forage and a narrow entrance which the stockmen blocked. In 1917 Professor Aubrey Drury (Southern Pacific Railroad) proposed the name 'Vaquero Meso' (Cowboy Mesa in Spanish) as the name was more attractive. The name was approved that year by the U.S. Geographic Board. In 1932, the Board, at the request of the U.S. Forest Service, approved the name 'Horse Mesa' (US-T121). |
