History: | Named for Colonel William A. Glassford, who used this hill in the 1880's as a heliograph station for sending messages to Baker Butte and on to Fort Union, New Mexico. The feature was shown as 'Bald Mountain' on state and federal maps between 1903 and 1927. The Spanish explorers had called it 'Malpais Mountain' ('bad country'). During its use as a heliograph station, it was known as 'Mirror Mountain' (AZ-T101/p. 261). |
