History: | An 1894 U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) map shows the name 'Fort Moroni' originally given to a camp established by John W. Young in 1877 and named for the Mormon Angel Moroni. Young referred to the area as Leroux Prairie. In 1908, the first forest experimental station in the US, called 'Fort Valley Experimental Forest' was established here. A 1912 U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) map shows the name 'Fort Valley' applied to this feature (US-T121, AZ-T101/p. 243). |
