History: | An 1896 General Land Office map shows the name for this feature as the 'Canille Mountains'. A local pioneer reported in 1923 that the feature was called 'La Sierra de las Osos Canellos', the Spanish name for 'The Mountain of the Cinnamon Bears', as there were bears of that specie in the area. Coincidentally, the hills themselves have a cinnamon color and, therefore, the U.S. Forest Service assumed the color of the hills to have provided the name (AZ-T101/p.316). |
