| History: | Canyon del Muerto means 'Canyon of death'. Named because of the slaughter in 1805 of the Navajo Indians in Massacre Cave by Lieutenant Antonio Narbona. The Navajo name, 'An-e'etseghi', is descriptive and means 'back of in-between the rocks' (AZ-T101/p.425). |
