History: | Named first 'Sierra del Tule' for the tule or reeds at Tule Tank in the range. Later, these mountains along with the Tule Mountains were renamed 'Mesa de Malpais'(badlands) for the volcanic terrain. It appears that the range was included in the Tule Mountains on a 1903 General Land Office (GLO) map, but by 1921 the present name had been adopted for both. Subsequently, the Tule Mountains and Cabeza Prieta Mountains have been recognized as separate entities (AZ-T101). |
