History: | Earliest name for the mountains, 'Sierra del Tule', appears to come from Tule Tank where tule or reeds grew. The mountains were later known as 'Mesa de Malpais' (badlands) because of the volcanic terrain in the eastern portion. The 1903 General Land Office (GLO) map, however, shows 'Tule Mountains', but a 1921 General Land Office (GLO) map shows the feature as 'Cabeza Prieta Mountains' (Spanish 'black head' for the volcanic terrain). Subsequently, the Tule Mountains and Cabeza Prieta Mountains have been recognized as separate entities, but Tule Tank, the origin of the Tule mountains name, is now in the Cabeza Prieta Mountains (AZ-T101). |
